Halfway on the motorway between Vienna and Budapest, near the Austrian and Slovakian borders lies this colourful town Gyr. Gyr, Hungary's second richest town in historic buildings outside Budapest has won Europe-award for the protection of the historic buildings, in acknowledgment of the reconstruction of the Baroque centre of the town. Churches, palaces, museums, characteristic corner-balconies and narrow lanes, all reminders of a historic past, invite visitors to take a walk in the centre of the town.

The city centre is packed with fascinating museums offering displays of local artefacts, Renaissance and Baroque furniture, and the wonderful ceramics of Margit Kovcs. In the town of festivals where friends of the arts and those who are eager for a high-quality relaxation can find attractive programmes all the year round, including the Baroque Nostalgia Art Festival, the Spring Festival and the Mediawave Art Festival.

Look out in particular for performances by the world-famous Gyr Ballet Company.

The Quelle Thermal- and Adventure Spa is located at the conjunction of the Mosoni-Danube and the Raba rivers in Gyr. The thermal water of the region is highly effective in the cure of many diseases, which was noted as early as the Middle Ages. The present location of the spa had been a beach area from the beginning of the 19th century. Following a through renovation, the seasonal beach became a modern spa with a therapy section, operating all year around.
